Beetles are a central theme to my current work and I use them as pattern in various ways. In the beetle body series they are used as a form of disruptive modification. My paintings and drawings are redefined versions of images gathered from fashion editorials, media imagery, or altered photographs. The beetle patterns are a visual protest and tainting of body representations in advertising with regard to beauty standards, gender norms, and body perfection. Being bombarded with white standards, unrealistic beauty and body ideals, and a fixed version of “femininity” , other bodies and gender identities become marginalized and disregarded. This series is a contamination of those standards of “femininity” and a visual statement against these long-standing and ongoing constructs.
